In the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian citizens, the Indian government has responded with firm and decisive actions aimed at national security. Among these measures is a complete ban on Pakistani-flagged ships from entering Indian ports.

This move marks a significant escalation in India-Pakistan tensions, as maritime trade and diplomatic ties continue to deteriorate.

What Just Happened? India’s Immediate Ban on Pakistani Ships

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways announced a new restriction under Section 411 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, which prohibits

  • Pakistani-flagged ships from entering any Indian port
  • Indian-flagged ships from visiting any port in Pakistan

The ministry emphasized the move was taken to protect Indian ports, infrastructure, cargo, and strategic assets. The ban takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.

According to the official order:

“A ship bearing the flag of Pakistan shall not be allowed to visit any Indian port, and an Indian-flagged ship shall not visit any ports of Pakistan.”

This directive is not just symbolic. It will directly impact trade routes, shipping operations, and regional maritime logistics, sending a strong message following the attack.

Why This Matters: India’s Strategic Maritime Interests

India’s maritime trade is a vital component of its economy, and the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, ensures its national maritime interests are protected.

By invoking Section 411, the government has exercised its authority to restrict foreign vessels that could pose a security threat.

This measure is aligned with India’s broader national policy:

  • Promoting self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in trade
  • Securing maritime assets and coastal defense
  • Strengthening the Indian shipping industry

📉 All Imports from Pakistan are Also Banned

This isn’t the only step India has taken. The Ministry of Commerce recently issued a separate notification declaring a total ban on all imports from Pakistandirect or indirect.

A new clause added to India’s Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023 now prohibits

  • Import of any goods originating from or exported from Pakistan
  • Transit of Pakistani goods through third countries

Recap of India’s Strong Measures Post-Pahalgam Attack

In response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, India has announced multiple national security measures:

  1. Ban on Pakistani ships at Indian ports
  2. Total ban on imports from Pakistan
  3. Closure of Attari-Wagah border, the only land trade route
  4. Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
  5. Diplomatic downsizing at both Indian and Pakistani High Commissions

These moves are meant to isolate Pakistan diplomatically and economically, especially for its alleged role in supporting cross-border terrorism.

What Will Be Affected?

Trade between the two nations had already slowed significantly since the 2019 Pulwama attack, when India imposed a 200% duty on goods from Pakistan. With this latest ban:

  • Pakistani exporters lose direct access to Indian markets
  • Indian maritime companies can no longer operate near Pakistan
  • Third-party trade via other countries will also be affected

Key goods affected include:

  • Fruits and dry fruits
  • Pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Oilseeds and agricultural produce
