In a shocking and heartbreaking development, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Baisaran, a scenic meadow near Pahalgam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, leaving at least six people injured, according to official police sources.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the region just as Kashmir’s tourism season was picking up. The area, known for its lush landscapes and panoramic views, turned into a scene of panic and chaos as gunshots echoed through the hills.

What Happened?

As per police reports, shots were fired at a resort in Pahalgam, where a group of tourists had gathered. Eyewitnesses and one survivor have recounted the horror. Speaking to PTI over the phone, a distraught woman shared, “My husband was shot in the head, and seven others were also injured in the attack. Please help us.”

The Jammu and Kashmir Police and Indian Army swiftly responded to the incident, rushing to the spot and launching a massive search operation in and around the Baisaran meadows, which are only accessible by foot or horseback. Security forces are actively gathering intelligence as the situation remains tense.

“Disturbing news coming from Pahalgam, where tourists were attacked… requesting immediate help,” posted Umesh Talashi, spokesperson for the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Council, on X (formerly Twitter), tagging CM Omar Abdullah and senior security officials.

No Fire Exchange Yet, But Fears Loom Large

So far, there have been no reports of a direct firefight between the attackers and the security forces, but the fear of escalation remains. The operation is ongoing, and officials are working to identify and neutralize the threat.

Kashmir’s Security Under Spotlight: Hi-tech Terror Den Busted Earlier

This attack comes just days after a major counter-terror operation in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, where a high-tech terror hideout was uncovered in the Chhatru forest on April 14.

Over a 25-day long operation, forces discovered a sophisticated base linked to Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The site included:

  • Advanced survival equipment
  • Solar panels, GPS systems, and Wi-Fi devices
  • Food supplies for 10–15 days
  • Religious texts and an underground escape tunnel

This hideout was clear evidence of a long-term, well-planned terrorist presence in the region—raising serious concerns about sleeper cells and future threats, especially in tourist-heavy areas.

Tourists Targeted: What’s Next for Kashmir’s Tourism?

The attack is a grim reminder of the fragile peace in Jammu and Kashmir, even as the region tries to rebuild its tourism industry. Security agencies have intensified patrolling and surveillance across key locations, especially those frequented by visitors.

Authorities are urging caution while they continue to secure the area and investigate the motives and affiliations of the perpetrators.
