According to Downdetector, reports of UPI failure started spiking around 11:49 AM on April 12, 2025. The complaints crossed 1,168 by early afternoon, with a sharp red spike indicating a massive disruption.

- Google Pay: 96 complaints
- Paytm: 23 complaints
- PhonePe and others: Users flooded social media with screenshots of failed transactions and error messages.
A tweet by user Rohit Prasad (@RohitPrasa41090) summed up the public frustration:

What Did NPCI Say?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees the UPI system, acknowledged the outage.
Their official statement read:
“NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
No specific root cause has been shared yet, adding to user anxiety.
